Dense Fog Advisory continues until 2 PM, clouds linger through tomorrow —

DENSE FOG ADVISORY has been expanded south and extended through 2 PM. This advisory now includes Springfield and Branson. Fog is causing visibility to drop to a quarter mile or less. Use headlights and take it slow on the roads!

Showers are pushing through the Ozarks this morning as an area of low pressure hangs out to our west and a front splices through the Ozarks. Temperatures are above freezing so all rain is expected with no icing concerns.

These rain showers are quick — showers exit east by noon today. Clouds, however, will stay thick and linger behind. That will keep highs holding steady in the low to middle 40’s.

Mostly cloudy skies hang around tonight with lows in the middle 30’s.

We’ll keep highs in the 40’s tomorrow despite mostly cloudy skies. Southerly winds will be breezy with gusts to 25 to 30 mph at times.

Southerly winds will be breezy with clouds increasing ahead of our potent, weekend winter storm.

Rain showers start up on the overnight on Friday into Saturday morning. I expect rain for all of the Ozarks, with some of it locally heavy especially closer to the low southeast of Springfield. There, 1-1.5″ rain is possible, posing a limited flooding threat, especially for areas already saturated and prone to flooding.

Cold air comes in FAST on Saturday. Temps start in the middle 30’s Saturday morning and fall through the 20’s by Saturday afternoon. This cold air will quickly change rain to snow with little in the way of a wintry mix in between.

Expect snow showers on Saturday afternoon with road conditions deteriorating as any wet/ snowy roads freeze in the falling temps.

With snow coming in on the backside of this low, I expect snow accumulations to be fairly light, 2″ possible in central Missouri with less than that elsewhere.

Winds will also be blustery, dropping wind chills into the single digits in the afternoon.

An Arctic high comes in right behind the low, pushing snow out to the east by Saturday night. Mostly sunny skies return on Sunday with cold highs.

While we’ll still get Arctic air, a move to the east will give us a glancing blow with temps not quite as cold as previously forecasted. Highs will be in the 20’s with wind chills in the teens. Lows on Sunday night drop into the teens.

Kickoff in Kansas City will still be cold for the AFC Championship — in the teens with chills in the single digits to sub-zero — again not as frigid as previously forecasted.

Our next system comes through on Tuesday with a chance for rain/ snow.
