SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– On just his 10th day with the team, Zach Kirtley played walk-off hero as Springfield topped Midland 9-8 in 11 innings.
Springfield got off to a dramatic start with Roel Ramirez on the mound.
The right-hander escaped two jams in the first three innings to keep the game scoreless en route to a nine strikeout performance over five innings.
The Cardinal bats finally arrived in the bottom of the fourth behind a three-run bomb from Jose Godoy.
The designated hitter’s third long ball of the year put the birds up 3-0 on Midland.
The Rockhounds, however, would respond quickly.
Midland posted two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to claim a sudden 6-3 lead.
Unlike many games before, though, Springfield would not bow out.
The Cardinals earned three runs on RBI’s form Alberto Triunfel, Dylan Carlson and Irving Lopez to tie the game at 6-6.
Both sides would add another run, sending the game to extras.
Midland would take the lead in the eleventh inning, but Springfield would get the final laugh on an RBI double from Conner Capel to tie the game.
Then Zach Kirtley played hero in just his second week with the team, walking it off with an RBI single to claim a 9-8 win over the Rockhounds.
