SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Tulsa Drillers followed up an eleven run shutout Tuesday with a six home run performance in Wednesday’s rubber match to top Springfield, 10-7.
The visitors set the pace early with three runs in the opening two innings including back-to-back home runs in the top of the second inning.
The Cardinals would respond in the bottom frame with an RBI groundout from Elehuris Montero to score Evan Mendoza.
That was followed by a two-run blast courtesy of Scott Hurst to tie the game at three.
Springfield would never take a lead, however, as the Drillers proceeded to send balls over the fence in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
The Cardinals would make things interesting in the end behind two eighth inning home runs from Shane Billings and Chris Chinea to bring the game back within three.
It wouldn’t be enough, however as as the Drillers topped the Cardinals 10-7 to earn a 2-1 series win.
Springfield falls to 5-9 with the loss.
The Cardinals will look for their first road win of the year next as they travel to Northwest Arkansas for a three game series with the Naturals starting Thursday.
