SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The 2019 Springfield Cardinals are getting a feel for Hammons Field over the next few days before heading down to Springdale to open the Texas League season.
Springfield will play at the Northwest Arkansas Naturals starting Thursday night.
It’s three games there, then a three game series at Tulsa before opening the home schedule on April 11th.
There are a number of pitchers who return from last year, but not a lot of position players.
Only two who spent longer then a week at Double AA.
Regardless of whether the players are old or new, they realize how special it is to play in Springfield.
“We’ve got a young group of guys. And they’re asking me questions her and there. And you just tell them what’s up. And to be ready for a season. It’s fun out here in the Texas League, good stadiums, good ballparks and good fans all around,” said Springfield infielder Chris Chinea.
“I find it exciting honestly. For me I’ve always been a younger player. So for me I look at it as a benefit or an advantage. Because for me it keeps me around the older guys. Keeps my head sharp. Keeps me learning,” said Springfield outfielder Dylan Carlson.
