SPRINGFIELD, Mo--The Springfield Cardinals will open the new 2018 Double-AA baseball season Thursday night in Midland, TX.
Last year, the Cards finished second in the Texas League North in both the first and the second halves.
In the second half, Springfield was two games out of the playoffs.
Monday's media day was supposed to be outside on the diamond at Hammons Field.
But the cold, wet weather moved the fesitvities inside.
Johnny Rodriguez returns as the Cardinals Manager for a second straight season.
And 13 of the new Cardinals roster played in Springfield last season.
"I thought last year we overachieved in a certain way because we had a lot of young guys. We didn't have the greatest bullpen in the world and look at the record. We tied the all-time record for wins. And if Tulsa doesn't have a Triple AAA club. We have an opportunity," said Rodriguez.
"We have a great group of guys. We have experienced guys who were on the team last year. A lot of returning starters coming back. And some new guys who will come in and fill the holes of guys moving up to Triple AAA and trades and whatever. I think we have a good group and I'm looking forward to the season," said Cards catcher Andrew Knizner.
Springfield will start the season Thursday night at Midland against the RockHounds.
Then they'll go to Frisco before returning to Springfield on April 12th for the home opener.
