Mt. Vernon falls in softball semifinals

Mt'Neers will play for third place Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Kennett won a wild softball state semifinal game on a wild play in their final at bat Friday at Killian Stadium. Jaden Yates hit a game-tying RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth inning, and when came all the way around to score after an errant Mt. Vernon throw behind her at second base. Kennett advanced to the state championship game with a 5-4 win.

In the seventh, Mt. Vernon freshman Hadley Cornell led off with a double, but the Mt'Neers could not get the tying run home. With Cornell on third with no outs, Madison Schubert popped out to second. Cornell tagged up and started toward home plate, but Kennett catcher Caroline Byers threw back to third in time for the tag and double play. Pitcher Emillie Johnson finished off the comeback with with a strikeout.

Mt. Vernon (21-10) will face Potosi (20-2) in the third place game Saturday at 11 a.m.
