SPRINGFIELD, Mo — Dense fog surrounded Plaster Stadium and Missouri State University for the last day of high school football in the State of Missouri.
The fog has been about as elusive as a state title has been for Monett High School. Their last was back in 1977, 39 years ago.
This years Cubs team looks to rewrite history.
What’s an hour drive for a small town with big dreams.
“It was loud on the sidelines,” explained Monett head coach Derrick Uhl. The Monett sideline soared well into the upper deck at Plaster Stadium. “We had a great crowd. They did a great job of keeping our kids going.”
Ian Meyer would please the crowd first with this 2 yard rush up the middle, but their foe Maryville would answer with back to back touchdowns. Trey Oglesby hits Spencer Morriso over the middle, and then
John Zimmerman for the 40 yard over the shoulder catch. The Spoofhounds, were in control early, but the Cubs, would answer.
The senior, Michael Branch dives into the endzone. The running back would end up with 81 yards on the day.
In the 4th, Monett down by 4, and Maryville would make a mistake.
This punt attempt, goes over Jacob Reuter’s head. Aaron Howard makes the stop, and Meyer would capitalize for the lead.
And just as the winning chants surfaced, a play the Cubs call “The Iron Bowl,” solidified the game, as Monett takes the Class 3 State Title, 27-18.
