Monett advances to Class 4 quarterfinals

The Monett Cubs rallied to beat Springfield Catholic 5-4 Tuesday to advance to the state quarterfinals for the second time in three years.

Catholic took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly and a Ben Galligos two-run double. Monett came back in the third inning at U.S. Baseball Park, as Alex Rivera singled home Wes Merriman for the Cubs’ first run. Cole McCullough chopped a single up the middle, plating two more runs to tie the game.

In the fifth, Alejandro Groomer delivered the go-ahead, two-run double, one-hopping off the right field fence and bringing the eventual winning runs home.

The Cubs (19-6) advance to the state quarterfinals, where they will meet the winner of Wednesday’s sectional meeting between Helias Catholic and Marshfield.
