Springfield Cardinals outfielder Oscar Mercado set a new franchise record by extending his hit streak to 19 games in Thursday’s 9-1 win over Northwest Arkansas.
The converted shortstop dove around a tag at first base for a bunt single in the third inning. He scored the game’s first run later that inning, hustling from first on Adolis Garcia’s double to center.
Anthony Garcia hit his first Double-A home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the seventh, to put the game out of reach.
Starter Matt Pearce turned in his best performance of the season, finishing eight innings, striking out three and allowing one run on a sixth-inning home run.
Springfield (13-12) finishes its eight-game homestand Friday at 7:10 against the Travelers.
