The Springfield Lasers needed a “supertiebreaker” to stave off a New York Empire comeback Thursday night, winning a 23-22 thriller at Cooper Tennis Complex.
Miomir Kecmanovic won the opening men’s singles set 5-4, but Springfield dropped the ensuing women’s and men’s doubles by the same score. After Abigail Spears secured a 5-3 singles set victory, New York captured the mixed doubles set 5-4 to force the decisive tiebreaker.
In the tiebreak, Daniel Nestor and Spears battled to a 7-6 victory, earning the decisive point for Springfield.
The Lasers (2-2) continue their weekend homestand Friday against Orange County. Wimbledon double’s champion Jack Sock will make his season debut for Springfield.
