Kelce steps into new leadership role for Chiefs

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — If tradition rings true: There are a couple givens at Chiefs Camp each year.

An outfit from Anthony Sherman — and another year of work for tight end Travis Kelce.

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs TE — “I’ve been fortunate to keep coming back to this place. This is my 6th year so I must be doing something right.”

The Ohio native has averaged 76 receptions and 5 and half touchdowns over the last 4 years. Last year, he caught a career high 8 touchdowns.

He’s was undoubtedly a favorite target of Alex Smith, and will be one of many weapons in 2018 with newcomer Patrick Mahomes.

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs TE — “Pat (Mahomes) has quite an arsenal to throw to, and it’s now just the receivers. DeMarcus Robinson and Chris Conley are making big strides forward, but you also have the running backs. Guys like West, Hunt, and Ware. We have an offence we are excited to work with.”

Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach — “Everybody had a chance to catch the ball and that’s what nice about the guys we have. They all understand that there is only 1 ball and eventhough they know that ball might be headed in the opposite direction, they are still going to get that extra rep in on their routes to become better route-runners.”

Kelce will once again find himself as a powerful tight end this year. That hasn’t changed.

What has, is his leadership in the locker room.

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs TE — “It’s cool to see some of the younger guys come to me when they have questions, and hearing that my opinion matters to them. There’s definitely an aspect of helping the guys get acclimated to the NFL but at the same time we haven’t reached the goal we set for ourselves to get to the Super Bowl and win that thing. I’m still trying to better myself so I can give my team the best chance to win while I’m on the field.”
