SPRINGFIELD, Mo–It may be the off season but that doesn’t mean Missouri State football coach Dave Steckel isn’t working his playbook, or should I say phonebook. Because Sunday Stec pulled out all the stops to hold a private fundraiser at Nicola’s in Springfield, with the guest speaker being hall of fame icon, Mike Ditka.
The event was closed and by invitation only. Mike Ditka played tight end in the NFL for 12 seasons. Then as a coach, led the 1985 Chicago Bears to a super bowl championship.
Ditka also used to coach against Stec’s brother in the NFL and had plenty of advice for Missouri State’s Dave Steckel and his Bears.
“Get a lot of good players Stec, big guys that are fast, that hit people, knock em down, bloody their nose. You get those kind of players… no you’ll do fine. I think a lot of it is recruiting. You’ve got to be able to recruit there is no question about it. He’ll do fine. He knows what he wants to do and he knows what he wants to get, so he’ll do fine,” said Mike Ditka.
“I’m like very humbled, number one, obviously. Number two, I’m like a little kid in a candy store. We not only have a hall of fame player but a legendary coach, it’s awesome to be able to pick his brain and talk football with him,” said Dave Steckel.
