Missouri State starter Dylan Coleman struck out a career-high 13 batters over eight innings and Matt Brown swatted a go-ahead, two-run home run in Friday’s 5-3 win over Southern Illinois.
Coleman struck out the side in the first, second and fifth innings, and his final strikeout made it a baker’s dozen to close the eighth and preserve a one-run lead.
The Bears trailed 2-1 in the sixth, when senior Matt Brown launched his team-leading eighth homer to give MSU its first lead. After Ben Whetstone scored on an error in the eighth inning, Brown added a final insurance run with an RBI-single.
Missouri State (31-14, 14-2 MVC) extended its home win streak in conference to 22 games and maintained a one-game lead over Dallas Baptist atop the Valley standings.
The Bears will continue their final home series Saturday at noon at Hammons Field.
