KANSAS CITY, Mo–The Kansas City Chiefs football team was rocked to its core Friday.
In a matter of hours, the number one team in the AFC saw its star running back assaulting a woman on video.
And then Friday night the Chiefs released Kareem Hunt because he lied to the front office about the incident.
Minutes after reporters left the Chiefs lockerroom after a media session, TMZreleased video that showed Kareem Hunt shoving a woman to the ground outside of his Cleveland hotel apartment.
He later kicked her when she was on the ground.
A few hours after that video was leaked, the NFL put Hunt on the commissioners exempt list.
That means Hunt could not play and could not practice with the team until the league investigated the incident further.
Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt did not wait around for the league to act.
He cut Kareem Hunt from the team.
The second year pro from Toledo led the Chiefs in rushing with 824 yards and he has 14 total touchdowns.
Hunt issued an apology Friday night saying he deeply regrets what he did and hopes to move on.
This is the statement the Chiefs released a little before 8:00 p.m.:
“Earlier this year we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt.
At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue.
As part of our internal discussions with Kareem several members of our management team spoke directly to him.
Kareem was not truthful in those discussions.
The video released today confirms that fact.
We are releasing Kareem immediately.”
So where does that leave the Chiefs at running back going into Sunday’s game at Oakland?
Spencer Ware moves up to the starting spot.
He’s carried the ball 22 times for 124 yards and one touchdown.
The only other players on the roster at running back are Damien Williams and Darrel Williams.
Damien has one yard on three carries, Darrel has not played.
