Tyson Riley wasn’t sure he would get another shot at beating his hometown high school. The Mt. Vernon resident and Springfield Catholic quarterback checked the Class 3 playoff bracket after an exchange with an opposing coach following a 36-30 home loss to the Mountaineers.
“One of the [Mt. Vernon] coaches came up after the game and was like, ‘Hopefully we’ll see you again,'” Riley said. “I looked at the [bracket] and was like ‘Cassville? I don’t know about that.’ And here we are again, so I guess he was right, and I’m ready to play them.
The Mountaineers are coming off an impressive 34-14 district championship victory over previously unbeaten Cassville.
Thursday’s practice was much warmer than the two prior at Catholic, but few have been complaining this week. Head Coach Steve Hancock put things in perspective.
“Most of the football players in Missouri are at home underneath electric blankets playing video games,” he said. “You’re lucky to be out here practicing and getting ready for another ballgame.”
Catholic (10-2) and Mt. Vernon (11-1) will kick off at 1 p.m. at Mountaineer Stadium.
