St. Louis pitcher Carlos Martinez threw two innings in Springfield Friday as he begins rehab for an oblique injury. The veteran right-hander threw two innings, allowing a solo home run and striking out one batter.
Springfield held a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning thanks to solo home runs by Andy Young and John Nogowski, plus a run-scoring double by Andrew Knizner.
Corpus Christi tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, then took the lead during a mental lapse by the Cardinals defense. Ryne Birk fouled out to the catcher Knizner, but with no one covering home plate, Josh Rojas took off from third for the go-ahead run.
The Springfield homestand continues through the weekend. Carlos Martinez will likely take Saturday off and make another relief appearance in Sunday’s series finale.
