After Saturday’s loss to Cincinnati, the St. Louis Cardinals announced they had fired manager Mike Matheny and named bench coach Mike Shildt interim manager.
In a statement, club owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said, “Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride, and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons. On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to wish Mike the very best.”
Along with Matheny, the organization dismissed hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller.
Matheny compiled a 591-473 record in just over six and a half season in the Cardinals dugout. He led the Redbirds to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons and won the 2013 National League pennant.
Shildt, 49, has been on the St. Louis staff since the start of last season. He previously managed the 2012 Springfield Cardinals to their only Texas League championship.
DeWitt and President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak will hold a news conference Sunday at 11 a.m. to discuss the staff changes for the organization.
