Saturday Smitty’s Mid-West Boxing Gym and the Springfield Boys and Girls Club hosted “Always Ready to Rumble VI.”
Sixty amateur boxers from across the region stepped into the ring in Springfield.
Two rings housed the evening’s action, one for novice fighters and the other for elite amateurs. Coach Smitty, Darrell Smith, had a few of each in the ring.
The top overall performer award went to Jeremy Robinson, a Kansas City Golden Gloves regional champ. He dispatched his opponent in one round.
Many of Saturday’s fighters got their first taste of in-ring competition. Tristan Dean, a 21-year-old from Mountain Home, Arkansas, gutted out a victory in his debut. He is 1-0 in his amateur boxing career.
“It’s nothing but nerves. After you land your first punch or get hit in the face the first time, the nerves kind of go away,” Dean said.
