KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police in Kansas City, Missouri shot and killed a woman armed with a sword Thursday.
The confrontation began when officers were called to a neighborhood because she was walking around carrying the weapon.
After they arrived, she ran into a house.
She then made her way into a shed where she barricaded herself and engaged in a stand-off with police.
An officer eventually fired a gun and killed the woman.
Police say efforts to get the woman to surrender failed.
"Unfortunately, those efforts were not successful," says Capt. Lionel Colon of the KCPD. "Officers work really hard every day tin his job to make sure the public is safe and to keep us safe as well. Unfortunately they were faced with a situation that was unavoidable and had to use, regrettably, lethal force to bring it to a close."
A nearby school hosting summer activities was put on lockdown during the stand-off.
Police are investigating the incident.
