SPRINGFIELD - Two people have been transported to the hospital after a small explosion and fire broke out at the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The two people injured were independent contractors.
There was a "low order explosion with flash fire" at the plant, the Springfield Fire Department said in a press release.
The fire started at around 4 pm, and the two contractors jumped off a 15 foot high roof to escape the fire.
A digester partially collapsed due to the fire and explosion. Digesters are used to stabilize solids that are removed from wastewater.
The situation was isolated, and water treatment has not been affected.
The two contractors suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the specific details of the injuries have not been released. Another contractor denied medical treatment at the scene.
