JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KRCG) - Two people died and another was injured overnight following a shooting and high-speed pursuit that stretched for more than 150 miles and ended in Illinois.
According to the Illinois State Police, a vehicle crossed into Illinois that was suspected to be part of a kidnapping and shooting in Missouri.
Officers stated they were chasing a car because it was connected to a kidnapping and shooting in Jefferson City in the 500 block of East Elm Street. When officers with the Jefferson City Police Department arrived, they saw multiple shell casings and broken glass indicative of a weapons violation. Witnesses identified the suspect and vehicle, a blue SUV, and area agencies were made aware.
A short time later, a Franklin County deputy saw a vehicle matching that description and tried to conduct a traffic stop. When the vehicle continued on, the Missouri State Highway Patrol joined in the chase on Interstate 44 and into Illinois.
The Illinois State Police stated the kidnapping victims, a woman and a child, escaped the vehicle on U.S. Highway 40 east of the Poplar Street Bridge, the woman, identified as Danielle Smith, having multiple gunshot wounds. She immediately went into surgery, but law enforcement was not aware of her condition.
