St. James Man Indicted in Rolla Woman's Death

Pleaded not guilty to charge

PHELPS COUNTY, Mo.-- A St. James man was indicted by a Phelps County Grand Jury on January 10 for the death of a Rolla woman in December 2017.

26-year-old Dallas Hogue was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter alleging that he recklessly caused the death of 34-year-old Tanya Johnson. He was also charged with felon in possession of a firearm.

On Dec. 23, around 6:30 p.m., a deputy went to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center after a report of a woman with a gunshot wound to her back.

Johnson later died that evening at the University Medical Center in Columbia, Mo.

Police searched the home the same day and found a black Ruger .22 caliber pistol in the living room, near the front door of the residence in the 1700 block of County Road 3520, according to the probable cause statement.

Hogue was arrested the next day. He told officers Johnson "accidentally shot herself at the rear of the residence with a .22 caliber pistol."

The man said after taking Johnson to a car to "transport her for medical attention," he went to the back of the residence, where the pistol was. Hogue said he put the pistol in the house on a table.

According to the statement, he said when he entered the residence, "the firearm discharged and a bullet penetrated the floor."

An autopsy performed on December 26, 2017, determined Johnson died because of that gunshot wound to her back.

Hogue pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to be in court February 5.

A joint investigation by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, Phelps County Coroner, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol into this death is on-going.
