BRANSON, Mo. -- Back here at home a familiar face to hundreds of thousands of people who paid a visit to the Ozarks has passed away.
Gene Bortner was a long-time worker at Silver Dollar City starting at the Branson attraction when he retired to the area in 1981. He worked there for 36 years until he retired just one year ago.
Generations of tourists knew him as "Uncle Gene."
This is video above of when KOLR10's David Oliver featured Bortner in Oliver's Ozarks in October 2005.
At Silver Dollar City Gene was a candle maker, crafter and blacksmith and in more recent years he was the greeter at the cave as you enter the park.
Gene was a veteran of World War II and Korea.
Gene was 92 years old.
