BRANSON, Mo. -- The New York Times named Branson No. 21 on its "52 Places to Go" list for 2018.
The Times interactive list was published Wednesday morning and includes a wide variety of destinations across the globe, among them New Orleans (No. 1), China's Gangwon Province (No. 7) and the Luang Prabang region in Laos (No. 52).
Branson was cited for "upping its game," wrote Mekado Murphy.
Silver Dollar City's new Time Traveler coaster rated a mention, as did Branson shows such as the Haygoods.
The list is a ranked one, Times editors said in an explainer on how they put together the list. They took hundreds of suggestions from contributors and pared them down after a "marathon-length meeting."
New Orleans earned the top spot because the 300-year-old city "is unlike any other city in the world," blending traumatic and joyful history.
For the first time in the 13 years of the list, the Times hired a magazine writer, Jada Yuan, to travel to all 52 places chosen.
The News-Leader reached out to Branson Mayor Karen Best and the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce for comment but has not yet received a response.
Earlier this month, USA TODAY's 10 Best travel site named Wonders of Wildlife in Springfield its Best New Attraction for 2018, among a pool of 20 competing U.S. destinations.
