GREEN FOREST, Ark. —  Some Missouri schools are dealing with a highly contagious disease.

The health center is continuing to see Mizzou students with mumps– and a case also popped up in Green Forest, Arkansas this week.

As of Friday, 128 cases of mumps have been identified at the University of Missouri in Columbia.  The majority of cases continue to have links to students in Greek organizations.

“We have to make sure any students that have not received the injections are not near an area with the one who is contagious,” said Green Forest Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Summers.

Although mumps outbreaks haven’t been common in the U.S. since routine vaccinations began, according to the CDC– there has been a rise this year.

As of Nov. 5– 2,879 mumps cases had been reported nationwide since the beginning of the year, which is more than twice as many as in all of 2015.

Students impacted will be staying home for up to 26 days.
