MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — “Charged with 1 count of aggravated child abuse.”

Miriam Rebolledo was inside a Miami-Dade County courtroom Friday, after police say she purposely burned her six-year-old son’s hand on a hot stove top in order to teach him a lesson.

“Maybe in Colombia it’s okay to take a child a place their hand on a burning stove, but in the United States, it’s not,” the judge said. “That’s not proper parenting.”

The arrest form says it happened at this southwest Miami-Dade home Wednesday night.

WPLG stopped by but no one answered the door.

The 29-year-old mother told police she has had behavioral issues with her child in the past and has tried other methods of punishment, but nothing seemed to work. When she got a phone call from his school on Wednesday saying her son hit another child, she admitted to police she couldn’t take it anymore and went to extreme measures to punish him.

Now she’s facing child abuse charges.

“You have the cutest son,” the judge said. “I met him this morning. He’s very sad that he has to go to foster care.”
