LACLEDE COUNTY, Mo. -- The father of a 2-month-old girl was arrested and charged with felony child abuse Saturday after the girl died at Mercy Hospital in Lebanon last week.
Kyle Nickel, 26, was arrested by Laclede County Sheriff's Office and Missouri State Technical Assistant Team Saturday on a Class A felony charge of child abuse, according to a press release from the Laclede County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's deputies, the Lebanon Rural Fire Department and Mercy EMS were all called to the 28000 block of Pelican Drive in Laclede County on March 27 shortly after 6 p.m., according to the release.
A relative of the 2-month-old, who lived next door to Nickel and the child's mother, called 911 saying that the child was not breathing.
When authorities arrived on the scene the infant was unresponsive. The infant was transported by ambulance to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to the release.
According to the press release, the hospital staff noticed infant had sustained some form of injury, starting an investigation from the sheriff's office.
“These are tough cases to work; I was pleased with the teamwork of our investigators and the STAT investigator," said Laclede County Sheriff David Millsap. "STAT brings in another level of expertise in child abuse cases and are a valuable resource to call on.”
An autopsy conducted in Springfield, Missouri on March 30 discovered the infant had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to the head, according to the release.
Nickel is being held without bond at the Laclede County Detention Facility, according to the release.
