Humane Society Breaks Ground on New Outdoor Project

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri broke ground on a long-awaited project this morning.

The shelter will have a year-round covered outdoor space for dogs and will include multiple play areas, a dog training space, as well as meet and greet areas.

Executive Director Sue Davis says the Humane Society is looking at adding a water feature for hot days.

"We will be actually renovating the backyard space that we currently have," Davis said. "Even though it looks good, it's very restricted. When it's 95 degrees, as it is today, we can't put dogs out on the hot concrete, or when it's raining or ice storms and such. The new area will have an overhang, which will make it multi-functional, and we will also have green space as well."

Davis says heating and cooling are also on the agenda, so dogs can truly benefit from the space in all seasons.
