Arkansas Flu Numbers Triple

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Flu numbers in Arkansas taking a turn for the worse.

The number of flu-related deaths more than tripled statewide in the past two weeks.

The Arkansas Department of Health says the vaccine targets four different strains of the flu this year

But one particular strain that's been circulating - the H3N2 - has been less responsive to the vaccine.

Doctors say that same strain is particularly hard on older adults.

Of the 28 people reported to have died from the flu this year in Arkansas, the health department says none were children and the majority were over 65 years old.

It continues to recommend getting the flu shot.

"The flu vaccine may not keep people completely from getting the flu but it can make a really big difference in keeping people out of the hospital and perhaps even saving their lives," Dr. Jennifer Dillaha, medical director for immunizations for the Arkansas Department of Health, said.

The Arkansas Department of Health says numbers have spiked early this year.
