SPRINGFIELD, Mo- Brewing up the hill across from Sequiota Park is Four by Four Brewing Company. Four by Four hopped into the Springfield brewery scene centered on one goal.
“Really centered around bringing the community, very family oriented,” says Derek Shimeall.
Shimeall is one of the four in Four by Four.
“So the name Four by Four is four owners and four wives. Four couples basically started hangout together a lot, started traveling around the country, weekend trips, usually centered around microbreweries.”
That travel team of craft beer lovers brought a new flavor to the Springfield local brewery menu.
“Northwest Arkansas, Denver, Boulder, as well as places all around the country.
“We saw that every time you got a micro Brewery you find really good people, really local-centric focus, so we wanted to bring that idea that small nitch concept to Springfield,” says Shimeall.
One of the several ways they bring the community together is with a simple four by four board.
“The Beer it 4ward board as we call it is right here at the side of the bar.”
Think of a friend, co-worker, or random person.
“Anyone can come in and buy someone a beer, so you buy your friend John a beer and we’ll write their name on the board, tons of names on here this thing has grown drastically.”
And the next time that person walks in, they have a free beer waiting.
“The board has done so many things, we’ve started to see groups get together and go hey our names are on the board they’ll meet up and come and sit down together and haven’t seen each other in six months or a year.”
Even though they are the youngest of the breweries, they feel at home in the community.
“We’ve learned a lot, I respect small business evermore than I even knew before, it been amazing to see the other breweries Lost Signal, White River, Mothers, all the breweries that have been so supportive and working in a community atmosphere,” says Shimeall.
Four by Four offers games and crafts for families of all ages to enjoy.
