UPDATE: Power Restored After Widespread Morning Outages

SPRINGFIELD, Mo — Power has been restored to all City Utility customers following an early morning fire at a substation on West Grand.

Upwards of thousands were left in the dark, mainly in the downtown area, as Springfield Police officers were tasked with traffic control on intersections.

According to Battalion Chief Brian Athen, fire crews responded to the 500 block of W. Grand just before 2am on Friday morning, after a large boom could be heard coming from the CU substation.

Smoke was seen coming from one of the units, and the fire was quickly extinguished without damage to any nearby houses or equipment.

The outages were mainly focused on the interior of Springfield. The square in downtown was restored around 5:35am, with the all-clear given by Joel Alexander with City Utilities around 6:15.

The Springfield Police Department has also stopped all traffic control, as traffic signals appear to be fully functional.
