WRIGHT COUNTY, Mo. – Two people charged in connection with the shooting death of a 5-year-old are to appear in Wright County Circuit Court today (7-18-18) for the setting of a preliminary hearing in the case.
Cory D. H. Gass and Bobbie Jo Scott are each charged with three counts of first degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child after they allegedly left the child and two other children alone at their home.
Probably cause statements indicate that the Wright County Sheriff Adler responded to a call at a home in Hartville on July 2 to find a 5-year-old child dead from a gunshot wound.
During the investigation, deputies found that Gass and Scott left the home to pick up a paycheck in Rogersville and left three children, ages 3, 5, and 7 unattended in the home.
Court documents show that investigators also found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded 22 rifle in the room where the dead child was found.
Gass and Scott asked a neighbor to check on the children but they did not have anyone physically responsible to care for them.
Gass told investigators that the shotgun was his and that it was stored on the floor behind the chair in the living room where the child was found. Gass also said three weeks prior to the incident he took the child outside and showed him how the shotgun worked.
Both Cory and Bobbie said they had asked a neighbor to check on the kids while they were in Rogersville.
