Travelers Undergo Road Trip to Bring Recognition to Route 66

News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A group is taking an epic road trip in an effort to bring more recognition to Route 66.

Their travels brought them through Springfield today.

Representatives with the National Trust for Historic Preservation are traveling Route 66 in this Airstream trailer.

During their stop in Springfield, they told us they want to see Route 66 designated as a National Historic Trail.

Jason Clement, the marketing director for the National Trust for Historic Preservation tells us this would bring more funding and recognition for the mother road.

“We’re really hoping to preserve what makes Route 66 so special and the reason millions of people travel it every year, and that’s just this great roadside culture, and a really amazing snapshot of kind of Americana at its best,” Clement said.

A bill to grant Route 66 a historic designation is in the house right now.

Clement tells us he hopes the president signs the declaration before the end of the year.
