Suspect Shot While Trying To Carjack Officers

News

A St. Louis police officer and a carjacking suspect are both hurt after an altercation Tuesday.

Two detectives were running plates on a stolen Nissan Altima, believed to have been used in several carjackings.

At a stoplight, a man suddenly got out of the Altima and pointed a rifle at the detectives, telling them to get out of the unmarked vehicle.

They exchanged gunfire and the 21-year-old suspect was shot in the arms and legs but is expected to survive.

Police say the weapon the suspect used was a stolen AK-47.

“So recently, to St. Louis City as well as the region, has been experiencing an increase in carjackings. Specifically carjackings involving suspects armed with assault rifles,” said St. Louis Police Chief Lawrence O’Toole.

One of the officers was also injured and treated at an area hospital. He was hit in the face by shattered glass during the shooting.
