Suspect in Fatal Shooting of Officer Had Long Prison Record

ARNOLD, Mo. — We’re finding out more details about the man accused of shooting an officer near St. Louis Tuesday.

Officer Ryan O’Connor, 44, of the Arnold, Missouri police department was transporting Chad Klahs to jail.   Klahs, a burglary suspect, shot O’Connor inside his patrol SUV.
The shooting happened in the parking lot behind the police station, and officers realized something was wrong when the O’Connor never made it to the sally port to bring Klahs into the jail.

Klahs was also found with a gunshot wound, from which he later died.

It’s unclear whether O’Connor shot Klahs in defense or if it was self-inflicted.

O’Connor has been in law enforcement for 20 years and has worked for Arnold for three.

According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, Klahs had been in prison four times; most recently released in March of this year.
