SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Brandon Johnson has been charged in the homicide case of Danny Dayton, his half-brother, who was killed Nov. 11.
Johnson, 20, of Springfield, has been charged with second-degree murder and a felony count of armed criminal action.
He was arrested Sunday at about 8 p.m. by Webster County deputies, according to a probable cause statement released by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Philip Fuhrman.
Johnson was then interviewed by the Springfield Police Department, during which he said that Dayton and himself had been inside their home in the 1900 block of Verona Street when they began a “forced” conversation.
Dayton’s girlfriend also lived at the residence and was present at the time of the incident. She was included in the probable cause statement, saying that she was inside her vehicle at the residence, preparing to take Johnson and Dayton to work when the shooting occurred.
Johnson said he was walking outside with Dayton and he “just did it.”
Dayton’s girlfriend said she saw Johnson standing over Dayton after hearing several gunshots, according to the statement.
She said Johnson got in the vehicle with her and told her to drive away from their location. Johnson became angry and struck her in the face twice before she dropped him off at a cemetery in Springfield, she said.
Johnson said he didn’t recall what he had done with the gun, which he thought was Dayton’s, after leaving the vehicle.
“It was in my hand, then it wasn’t, I don’t really remember much,” Johnson said in the statement.
Dayton’s girlfriend also told police that Dayton owned a handgun at the residence, but the gun was not found during a search conducted after the police obtained a search warrant.
Johnson is being held in the Greene County Jail on $500,000 bond.
