Student Tip Alerts Parkview High School of Student with Handgun

News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A student tipped off Parkview High School administration that another student was carrying a handgun on school grounds.

The 15-year-old student in question was removed from class immediately for questioning, according to a press release from the Springfield Public School District.

The student was ultimately found in possession of a fully-loaded handgun, but after questioning it was found that the student only intended to use the gun for personal safety to and from school, according to the release.

However, Parkview High School is a weapons-free zone with a zero-tolerance policy for possession of any weapons on campus.

The student was transported and placed in the custody of juvenile authorities, according to the release.
Springfield Public Schools said in the release they are thankful for the tip to administration.

“We take this extremely seriously and will discipline this student accordingly, per Board policy,” the release said. “We want to thank the students responsible for reporting this situation to us immediately, allowing us to intervene right away.”

The press release said staff, parents and students have been notified and the school intends to be fully transparent.

“We encourage parents, staff and others in the community to reach out to us directly at any time with questions or concerns,” the release said.

A school police hotline can be reached 24/7 at 417-523-2911. For anonymous tips, the public is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 869-8477.
