SPS budget plan calls for chief diversity officer, equity training for staff

(NEWS-LEADER) – Hiring a chief diversity officer is part of Springfield Public Schools’ proposed spending plan for the 2019-20 year.

Superintendent John Jungmann said the new cabinet-level role will report to him and track progress on efforts to improve the attendance, graduation rate and academic performance of students from lower-income families and historically underrepresented groups.

In fall 2018, the school board examined data that showed the district was not making enough progress in closing achievement gaps and made a commitment to step up the efforts to make that happen.
