It’s all about building relationships with her students for Hillcrest High School Teacher, Courtney Dameron.
“With a lot of these students it’s the bond that you build with them and the trust that you build with them,” said Dameron.
Dameron, a Springfield native, graduated from Hillcrest back in 2002 with a plan.
“When I came to Hillcrest I took some Family Consumer Sciences courses,” said Dameron. “That’s when I was like this is what I want to teach and this is where I want to be.”
Dameron was recently named the Springfield Public Schools’ 2019-20 Teacher of the Year.
“It’s not necessarily that I have better statistics, better scores, or won something because of any one type of stat,” said Dameron. “I’m a representation, I think, of teachers who are just like me in the district.”
Lydia Conlon is one of Dameron’s students.
“She is one of the most genuine people I have ever met in my entire life,” said Conlon. “She deeply cares about each of her students.”
Conlon said it means everything to have a teacher like Dameron who goes above and beyond.
“You can tell she puts so much time and effort into each and every lesson,” said Conlon.
Dameron works to set a good example for her students all while holding them to a high standard.
” I make an effort to tell my students you are loved you are important you are supposed to be here,” said Dameron. “I think that means a lot to them, because there are a lot of students who don’t have anyone telling them that.”
Dameron believes in engaging curriculum that benefits a student for their lifespan.
