Police Standoff

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield officials are investigating a possible murder/suicide.

On May 18 around 3 p.m., the Springfield Police Department received a call saying a man had shot a female inside an apartment building on West Walnut.

When police arrived, the male suspect had barricaded himself inside the apartment. Officials then shut down Walnut Street between Grant and Main.

SPD attempted to negotiate with the man using a megaphone, “but he refused to speak with officers or exit the home.”

“After negotiations failed, Special Response Team Officers entered the apartment and discovered two deceased individuals inside,” SPD said.

Both individuals suffered injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

Jacqueline Steinert, 52, was identified as the female victim and Matthew Stephens, 53, was identified as the male suspect.

Officials are still investigating the incident. If you have any information, you are asked to call SPD at 417-864-1810.
