SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Waite Showalter, 37, of Springfield was officially charged Tuesday after stealing a vehicle with a 5-month-old infant inside last week.

Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson announced that Showalter was charged with child kidnapping, stealing a motor vehicle and child abuse.

Child kidnapping is a class A felony. Stealing a motor vehicle and child abuse are class D felonies.

Showalter is being held at the Greene County Jail with a $60,000 bond.

Patterson reminded the public in the release that “car thefts are too common in Greene County and in many cases the stolen car was unlocked.” He urged the public to remember to lock your car, take the keys with you, and do not leave valuables in the car.
