Small Alligator Found on Greenways Trail

News

SPRINGFIELD – Alligators are commonly seen in the southern part of the US, but no one expects to see them wandering on a trail right here in Springfield!

This weekend, that’s exactly what happened when someone found an alligator on the Greenways Trail.

“This is an Ozark Greenway Trail Lizard,” jokingly, Jason Stratton said. “This is a newborn (alligator). It won’t get much bigger than this though.  I think this one full grown.”

“We got it up off the ground and sort of held it so that it wouldn’t get away,” Stratton said. “We took some pictures of it and a few video clips.  They had already called Animal Control to let them know that it was down here- One of the funny things about that story is that one of the people that they spoke to originally asked, I don’t think they believed what was going on.  They asked, are you sure?”

“The look on the agents face when they came out (was priceless) she was quite taken back that we had found an alligator on the trail here,” Stratton said.

The alligator was eventually handed off to animal control.
