SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — It’s a trend the Springfield Fire Department has become concerned about over the past year.  And the new year has started with another fire in a vacant house.

Battalion Chief Scott Jones says firefighters battled the flames in the 1400 block of West High Street shortly before 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. This is the first vacant house fire in Springfield for 2017.

But there were nearly 25 vacant house fires in Springfield in 2016; raising concerns for local firefighters.

That’s led city code administrators to look at making new requirements for vacant homes to help crack down on the problem.

No one was injured in this morning’s fire, which spread into the attack of the wood frame house.
