AVA, Mo- Parents in Douglas County can rest easier as school starts, thanks to the ‘Ava School Supply Project.’
The National Retail Federation reports the average family spends nearly $700 on back to school costs, much of that is spent on supplies.
The Ava School Supply Project was able to relieve that burden for more than a thousand students Friday night.
The event began ten years ago, with only two donors Russell Cellular, and a church.
Ben Winterton now works for Russell Cellular and explains that he was once helped out by this program.
“Now to be on the opposite side, and be able to hand out supplies and to know the situations people might be in or just to know and helping everyone in the community is just overwhelming because I’ve been helped by it and it’s just an awesome experience to be on both sides of the coin,” says Ben.
Leftover supplies won’t go to waste, they’ll go to area teachers to be used throughout the year.
