FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A Rogers teacher and her husband were arrested in connection to a sex abuse case, police say.

The Bella Vista Police Department said Douglas Jay Pershing, 54, and his wife Tamy L. Pershing, 46, were taken into custody on Friday. Both live in Bella Vista.

Tamy Pershing is a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Arkansas Arts Academy, police said.

Douglas Pershing faces a charge of second-degree sexual assault, and his wife faces a charge of failure to notify by a mandated reporter and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Police were notified of a sexual abuse investigation out of Henderson, Nev. on Aug. 10. It involved two young girls.

Authorities said Douglas Pershing had allowed both victims to touch him inappropriately on about 20 different occasions.

While being interviewed by police, Douglas Pershing said one of the victims had seen him naked multiple times, according to authorities. He denied the victims had touched him.

Tamy Pershing walked in on Douglas Pershing and one of the victims and told him “to stop and not do it again,” police said. She’s accused of failing to report the incident.

She was always careful with Douglas Pershing around her school so as not to “put him in a bad situation,” police said.

He is the author of a science fiction series for young adults.

Both were arrested at the Bella Vista Police Department and taken to the Benton County Jail.
