Regal Beloit in West Plains Plans to Eliminate 90 Jobs

WEST PLAINS, Mo. —  Regal Beloit in West Plains will be eliminating approximately 90 jobs by the end of the year.

The corporation says it’s the outcome of the company’s decision to restructure some operations.

According to a press release from Regal Beloit, some motor production and processes located at the West Plains facility will be transferred to other Regal facilities.

The company says consolidating some operations into existing facilities will enable the company to remain globally competitive.

“Anytime you have a loss of jobs, it’s going to impact the city economically,” says West Plains Economic Development Director Robert Case.

The West Plains location of Regal Beloit is one of the town’s major manufacturing companies.

“90 jobs,” said Case.  “Thank goodness it’s only 90 jobs instead of the entire workforce at Regal– which is about 240.”

The corporation, which manufactures electric motors, is headquartered in Wisconsin.

“We don’t know all the details of why those layoffs are occurring,” said Case.

While it’s unclear why the West Plains location is eliminating jobs, a press release from Regal stated it’s not a reflection on the efforts or performances of the employees.

“The plant here again is very different from the Regal plant that shutdown in Springfield,” said Case  “This one is a different division and produces a totally different product.”

West Plains has experienced growth in its manufacturing sector, which makes up 18 to 19 percent of employment there.

“We have experienced growth, but we don’t like to see existing companies reduce their force,” said Case.  “We’d like to see it go the other way.”

With a large workforce population, city staff say they hope the impact will be minimal.

“90 employees in a community with 19,000 people in the workforce,” said Case.  “90 employees isn’t going to impact us too much.”

Regal Beloit says its goal will be to help those impacted make a successful transition from their jobs to other employment opportunities.
