HOWELL COUNTY, Mo. – A rabies alert for Howell County has been issued after a stray cat tests positive.
The Missouri Health Department says the stray cat showed up a home with a family who took it in.
Ozark Radio News reports the family noticed the cat acting strangely and took it to a local vet, where it tested positive for rabies.
All five family members got anti-rabies shots, and two of their cats had to be euthanized.
Over the past five years, Missouri has averaged about 40 rabid animals annually.
Health officials urge pet owners to update their pets rabies vaccinations to keep pets and pet owners safe.
