Preparing for Allergy Season

SACRAMENTO, Ca. (CBS News) – Most people begin spending more time outdoors during Spring.

But ask anyone with allergies what the consequences are if you’re not prepared.

Doctor Travis Miller is an expert at keeping even the worst patient allergies at bay.

He has seen an uptick in the number of patients who are seeking treatment for their allergies.

According to Dr. Miller, the pollen count in the Sacramento area is much higher now compared to the last few years because of the fluctuating wet and warm weather.

Miller said, “Climate change has something to do with it we are seeing an earlier pollen season, a longer pollen season more and a higher pollen count.”

So is there a solution to those itchy, watery eyes and sneezing fits?

Doctor Miller says, yes.

He has been prescribing “Gras-tek” and “Rowi-tek” – two new and popular allergy medications.

Miller said, “You place it under your tongue daily, it’s fast and more convenient because you don’t have to come to the doctor to get shots, and it works very well for grass and pollen.”

And combining a prescription with allergy shots has been a life saver for Karanbir Gill.

Gill said, “I can be outside whenever I want, I can mow the lawn and play with my kids.”

Gill comes in to get his allergy shots every two to four weeks.

He’s been doing it for more than a year.

Gill says his treatment doesn’t give him full relief but he’s happy.

And for anyone who does want full relief, Dr. Miller has a solution for that too.

Miller said, “Get on a cruise ship and into the middle of the pacific for a couple of weeks, but besides that you have to literally remove yourself physically from exposure to the pollen.”
