BOLIVAR, Mo. – Authorities have filed charges in connection to an alleged child abuse case at Home Court Advantage in Bolivar. This comes after the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a video showing one person physically attacking a minor at the facility.
24-year-old Via Via Manuma, a former Southwest Baptist University football player, is facing two counts of assault and one count of abuse of a child.
According to the probable cause statement, Manuma struck the 17-year-old boy in the face, possibly to the point of unconsciousness.
The video recorded in July of 2016 is what the Polk County Prosecuting Attorney Ken Ashlock said prompted him to press charges.
Right now Manuma is the only one charged but Ashlock said he knows more reports are coming to his office in connection with the video and he expects the charges to be the same.
According to the probable cause statement, the victim said he was attacked by three people after he admits to leaving a room when told not to. That’s when the minor said Via Via Manuma grabbed him.
The victim then said Manuma followed him into the bathroom and pushed him but the victim admits to pushing back.
The probable cause statement said the minor stated he swung at Manuma and that’s when they began to fight.
“It was a horrible thing to watch in this particular case because of the assault and being in a place where the individuals who did the assault are in charge of taking care of them. That child had no alternative to go anywhere else. He’s required to be in that location and the one’s that did that assault are supposed to protect him,” said Ashlock.
Ashlock said regardless of the victim admitting to fighting back the people involved shouldn’t have done what they did to him. He said they took it beyond simple assault.
