LICKING, Mo. — A man faces assault and armed criminal action charges after police say he attacked a man with a hatchet during a domestic dispute earlier this week.

18-year-old Corey Smith, 18, of Houston, Missouri, was being held on $1 million bond.

Licking Police Chief Scott Lindsey says that the department was called to a home on South Main Street around 1:45 a.m. May 2  to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, the officer discovered a 26-year-old male who lived at the home suffering from serious injuries.

The victim told police that he had been involved in an altercation with the adult son of his girlfriend, who was later determined to be Smith. The victim says that Smith broke a glass table in the residence and when confronted, struck the victim several times with a hatchet before leaving the residence on foot. The victim was transported by ambulance to a landing zone for Air-Evac and then transported via helicopter for medical treatment.

Licking Police, with the assistance of the Texas County Sheriff’s Department, found Smith at a residence south of Licking, on Highway 137. Smith was arrested and taken to the Texas County Jail.
